Octavia Lenora Spencer is an actress, author, and producer from the United States. She has received numerous awards, including an Academy Award, a Golden Globe, and three Screen Actors Guild Awards. She is one of just two black women to have three Oscar nominations, and she is the first black actress to receive two in a row. Spencer made her cinematic debut in the drama A Time to Kill, released in 1996. Her breakthrough came in 2011 when she played a maid in 1960s America in The Help, for which she received multiple honours, including the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress. Octavia Lenora Spencer has six siblings, including sisters Rosa and Areka Spencer, and was born in Montgomery, Alabama. Dellsena Spencer (1945–1988), her mother, worked as a maid. When she was thirteen, her father died. Spencer suffers from dyslexia.

Spencer attended Jefferson Davis High School and graduated in 1988.
