Wright was the youngest of seven children born to Rosa Akins Braddy-Wright and her second husband, McArthur Norris, on December 21, 1953, in Miami, Florida. When she was two years old, Wright began her professional career when her siblings created the Echoes of Joy’s gospel ensemble. Wright sang on the group’s first album, released in 1956. Until the mid-1960s, Wright and her siblings performed together.

Following the group’s disbandment in 1965, Wright, then 11 years old and already known as Betty, decided to change musical styles from gospel to rhythm and blues. Singing in local talent shows until Betty was discovered by a local Miami record label owner, who signed her to her first label (Deep City Records) in 1966 at twelve. Wright gained local success in Miami after releasing the tracks “Thank You Baby” and “Paralyzed.”

In 1967, the youngster was responsible for uncovering other local talents like George and Gwen McCrae and assisting them in signing with Henry Stone’s TK recording and distribution company’s Alston Records label. Betty’s first album, My First Time Around, was published when she was only 14 years old. “Girls Can’t Do What the Guys Do” was her first hit single. Wright released “Pure Love” at sixteen in 1970, while still in high school.
